Caine's Arcade

Guys, you totally have to watch this short film.

Caine is a little boy living in East L.A. His dad runs an auto parts shop. During the summer Caine decided to build some "pretend" arcade games as he loves playing them so much. Only these weren't really pretend games- they actually work. He built them using tape and cardboard packing boxes.

A man buying parts in the store happened to see Caine's homemade arcade, and the rest is history...

If you want something to smile about, if you want to remember what it was like to be imaginative when you were little, do yourself a favour and go click this link to Caine's Aracde.

This kid is so driven and determined to get what he wants, if you wish you too could buy a 'Fun Pass' you can donate towards Caine's college fund so he can become an engineer, video game maker, entrepeneur- you name it!

I haven't been impressed like this for a long time, I totally would buy a Fun Pass if I could so I sent him some money. This kid could be the next Steve Jobs! I wasn't told to post about it, some people might scoff at sending money to strangers, but I just wanted to share it with you my readers because it's simply sweet and made me smile so much!

Shhh... Sweet Secrets

It's funny how some things from childhood really stick in our memories and stay there for long time. I still vividly remember certain things I owned when I was little; mostly toys and clothes; that still make me smile when I remember them.

In the midst of Transformers-fever in the 1980's, Galoob toy company came up with an alternative for little girls, pretend makeup & beauty products hidden inside jewellery and animal bodies- called 'Sweet Secrets'. As they got more popular, the toys got more complex, like stationery & actual make up inside like lip gloss & blush... too cute!

I remember them being an absolute craze when I was in the first few years of kindy & school in the late 80's, and one of my most favourite toys at that age was a Sweet Secrets mouse. He had a blue casing with a red jewel, and folded out just like a Transformer does. The 'jewel' pendant had a clip on the back so you could wear it on your clothes, and I recall mine also had a lanyard with a toggle clasp so you could wear it like a necklace. I think my father bought mine for me, which made me miss it even more as he passed away when I was 12. Imagine how happy I was recently to stumble across not only the retro ads on Youtube, but the exact mouse pendant on eBay. (I had to buy it :)

So I was excited when the packet finally arrived in the mail...

Yay! I love my mouse again, currently he is keeping my books company on the shelf. Did you ever have these in the 80's, or another favourite toy? Share it in the comments... :)

Serenity...

When I was younger I went through a phase of being completely obssessed by the anime series 'Sailor Moon'. The tale of the Moon Princess and her loyal Sailor Scouts completely sucked me in. I managed to amass a HUGE collection of pictures during my graphic design class (which sadly, were lost when my old PC died). My love of all things Japanese first began in grade 6 when we had a Sensei (teacher) come on exchange from our sister school in Japan. Doraemon was my first character that I loved,

yes even before Hello Kitty & her Sanrio friends.

As I went through my teenage years, I particularly loved the romantic story between Queen Serenity and King Endymion, characters from the future of Sailor Moon.

There's some really beautiful artwork out there, like this, one of my all-time favourites.

And a cute one of them asleep with their daughter, 'Mini Moon'.

As you can imagine, I was pretty happy the other day when I discovered these at my local markets. 2 whole series (4 discs) on DVD for $20 each!

HAPPY!!! ^_^

Read All About It...

When I was little, I read books all the time. I read so much that I could get through books in a matter of days. I remember reading the Lord of the Rings (all 3 books) within a week when I was around 9 years old. Sadly, being an adult and having to work means less time to read, and the internet has taken over my life a little bit more than books, but I still like to occasionally sit down and read a book.

I also like collecting vintage books, specifically ones about flight attendants. I managed to find some really cool ones on Etsy & Ebay. I'd ordered one back in September but sadly, it seemed that it had got lost in the mail. Then last week, I got a card from the post office saying that there was a parcel for me to collect. Yay! It was my long-awaited book...

It was well-wrapped which is always good.

How nice is this cover illustration?

Even the spine had a cute 'stewardess' in uniform on it.

I read this book on my day off in the park. It was a really good story, part of a series written in the 60's to give young girls an idea about what kind of careers they could have. I wish there was more than one about 'World Airways' though, the characters were good. I even ended up with a bit of a crush on officer Maitland, the blonde-haired hero of the story ;P

Musique dans un RĂªve

Ever since I was a little girl, I loved the story of the Secret Garden. The sadness of Mr Craven losing his pretty wife, being so devastated that he locked away that garden forever, then one young girl finding it and bringing it to life again with love and attention.

One day when I was home sick from school, my mother put on the tv and there was a movie adaptation of the book for the family movie. It was really well done and throughout the movie a variation on a musical piece was used as the theme. It remains the one piece of classicial music that 'gets' me every time I hear it. It's so achingly, hauntingly beautiful that I love it more every time I listen, and the last part is so pretty it makes me want to cry.

Here for your listening pleasure is Chopin's Nocturne #19 in E Minor. I dare you not to fall in love!

(PS the fact that Colin Firth was in this version of the movie is reason enough to watch it ladies, love me a man in uniform! ;)

Temporary Insanity

Oh. Emm. Gee!

I've gone completely googly-eyed over this amazing jewellery website, Temporary Secretary. I've had them on my links list for a little while, but just now was inspired to share the link with you all.

The accessories here are just so warm'n'fuzzily, adorably cute and brimming over with sugary sweetness that it makes my head want to explode. In a good way. So if you want a dose of happy, head right over for cuteness overload!

A Jet Girl Vintage Christmas

Over the last few years, Christmas has been anything but 'normal'. Often, I'm away from my friends & loved ones, so do my best to enjoy Christmas with the people I happen to be in company with. Sometimes this is colleagues, having a nice Christmas lunch in a hotel. Or it might be wearing reindeer ears and using tinsel to decorate the plane, bring some Christmas cheer, and make an annoucement to all the kids that we've spotted Santa heading south on the radar :)

So here I gve you my Perfect Vintage Christmas!!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~

Christmas Eve I would pack my suitcase, heading off into the world on another adventure.

Soon I would be on my way to Melbourne- on a vintage V-Jet of course!!

Along the way I would have a great time cheering up all the children on the flight; serving hot chocolate, singing carols on the tannoy and playing 'Spot Santa' out of the windows...

And giving the children a welcome home Christmas gift when we arrive on Christmas Day...

At the airport, where families are waiting for their loved ones to arrive for the Christmas visit,

I have a great surprise to find Super Kawaii Mama & Lady Melbourne to welcome me as Melbourne is not my home...

They drive me in a gorgeous vintage convertible to this lovely park

And set up on a nice patch of lawn is this Christmas picnic feast!

Of course presented in a retro-appropriate picnic set :)

After lots of conversation (about vintage dresses and other goodies!) we have a nice game of croquet to work off lunch.

Oh, and I'd be wearing this dress!

Soon the ladies head off to spend the rest of Christmas with their nearest & dearest, while I go to my hotel and there I find this in my room!

Wow a vintage Christmas tree, yay!

The hotel have left me a DVD, so I settle in with some cookies and milk to watch it.

On my pillow I find a beautifully wrapped present from my family:

Excitedly, I take off the paper and this is what is inside-

The Silkstone Stewardess Barbie!!! I've wanted one for ever!

I pick up the gorgeous hotel phone to call and thank them

And we spend hours reminiscing about Christmases past. Then I put on my special Christmas pyjamas and go to sleep, after the best Vintage Christmas ever!!

Merry Vintage Christmas, all!!!

(You can check out the other competition entries here)

Lastly, my rather lame drawing of SKM as an anime girl... didn't realise how out of practice I was, I haven't drawn in over a year! :/

Who Needs Bratz?

Most little girls own dolls during their childhood, mine were mainly Barbie or the odd Rainbow Brite doll; today it's Bratz and whatever teen stars are popular at the moment.

One rare treat my mother used to buy me, but which were very common in the 50's and 60's, was paper dolls. Again, mine were Barbie, Lady Lovelylocks or She-Ra, but common themes in earlier times were movie stars or other role models little girls looked up to.

One of the professions that many girls aspired to was to be a stewardess (or air hostess if they lived in the UK)

These paper dolls are just so cute, and also another good way to get an insight into the fashions of the day. The airline stewardess set comes with uniform, and clothes for play. The good news is, you can buy reprints of the original dolls from Judy's Place.

I thought this was a really interesting set for the times- Girl Pilots, a booklet from the 40's. Nice to see girl power was alive & well back then, and not only for nurses and WRANs :P
