Quick Fix- Broken Powder Compact

One of the downsides to my job is having to take a lot of makeup with me when I travel. Usually, I don't wear much makeup (aside from maybe mascara & lipstick) unless I'm either at work or going on a night out.

I've been pretty fortunate so far, in that I haven't lost or broken too many of my cosmetic items on my travels. The most frequent 'breakage' I tend to suffer is the dreaded powder compact drop-and-shatter. Sadly for me, the latest occurrence was while opening a new compact. In my tired state, I dropped it, and the powder cake broke. Oops. What to do? Well, if you are like me you hate waste, the good news is it's not the end for your powder foundation.

On a previous trip to Hong Kong, I had picked up some beauty storage containers, including this cute powder jar and puff from Sasa for a couple of dollars.

So, if you have dropped your powder like me, but want to keep using, here's what you do.

1. Get a powder jar & sifter set (Most Asian beauty stores have these cheaply)
2. Scrape the broken powder from the compact into a small container or bowl.
3. Using a suitable tool, crush the powder cake evenly until it becomes loose powder.
4. Transfer into the container, tapping the sides to settle the powder evenly.

Voila, your annoying broken powder cake is now a portable loose powder that you can carry around for touch ups :)

Environmentally AND purse friendly!

Oh and step 5? Try not to drop your next powder compact... ;)

Floral Feet

While in Auckland on my last trip, I ventured out of the hotel in search of food (feeling rather seedy after a night out I might add) and happened upon a cute op-shop called Paper Bag Princess. I only intended to look but these rather cute floral heels caught my eye. Just for fun, I tried them on. My size!! (It was a sign.)

They were only $10 and appear to be unworn. I've seen similar styles in the chain stores in Dubai and London for well over $60 Aussie dollars. Bargain! Of course they happily followed me home in my suitcase.

All along this street near the hotel were some cute vintage stores and gift shops. I totally intend on going back to explore properly on my next Auckland trip later this week. I'm hoping to get some photos too! :)

Progress...

So I officially got the call from Emirates Recruitment, advising me to attend the medical checks and provide certain other documents to them to enable the visa processing to begin.

Thus far, I have made appointments and am attending my first one later on this afternoon. This one is for the eye doctor. Well, firstly, my optometrist, so he can tell me if I need to see the eye specialist or not. Basically, I have had a certain eye condition since birth, so far it has not impeded me in any way and I have passed 3 medical tests to Australian aviation standard. The visit is pretty much to certify that I do not have the 'unacceptable' form of the condition and to get documentation to that effect.

Following on from that, if all goes well later in the month I'll have my last wisdom tooth removed at the same time as getting the dental exam forms done and then the general check-up by my GP and the blood tests/injections. (I am not looking forward to those!)

In other news, the clothing/possessions cull is going along fairly well. My ebay earnings have hit just under $200 which of course will either being going right onto the credit card, or into the fund for paying for all these required medical tests.

On the fun front, my Bali trip is getting closer. I had considered not going to save the money, but it is my friend's wedding after all, and a short relaxing holiday is probably a good thing for me to do before I head off overseas for the intensive training/settling in period in Dubai.

I'll be listing some more shoes and so forth in the next few days, so why not have a look at my Ebay listings :)

Off the Wagon

Confession Time: I fell off my 'non-spending' wagon last week BIG TIME. So, it's down to business and not buying anything I don't need. I blame my birthday & having lots of free time in Brisbane- a city where it's FAR too easy to get to the mall & department stores from my hotel. At least in Sydney, it requires a train or bus ride so mostly I cannot be bothered.

I'm considering freezing my credit card in ice (a la Becky Bloomwood in 'Shopaholic') as it just doesn't seem able to stay in my purse. I'm kind of blaming Alannah Hill a little, her stuff is just TOO cute.

The great closet clear-out continues, getting rid of things I no longer wear and trying to plan a wardrobe around basics in classic black and white with a few accents. For my birthday I had purchased a few items, one being a 'Friends of Couture' cardi in black with white trim & an Alannah Hill dress in a black & white print. (Posts to come on those once I find my camera cable)

On my to-do list:

* Finish reading "The Power of Now' (have any of you read it, what did you think?)
* Watch how I speak (slipping too easily into 'bogan-esque' these days)
* Keep my room tidier (culling wardrobe should help)
* List culled items on eBay/Etsy

That's about it for now, hoping to do some more posts when I get a bit more 'me time' :)

Paying Up and Pink

I've been really busy with work lately & haven't really been in the mood to blog, which is why so few updates. I guess also I'm not really sure if anyone reads this so I tend to really only want to update when I have something to say... guess I'm not very chatty at the momennt, hehe.

I've been doing ok in my goal to pay money off my credit cards, of course there is always room to improve but I feel like if I get too strict with it then I'll sabotage my efforts as I will feel like I'm missing out then just go on a big spree to make up for it. A girls' gotta have SOME fun, right? :)

So the only things I have shopped for was to buy a mobile broadband key (Prepaid of ccourse!) so that I can use the internet when I'm away. I have internet on my phone but for certain work purposes a mobile phone doesn't cut it. For example, to log into my online roster or check other work-related websites and download documents. As hotels charge exhorbitant rates (around AUD$30 per day) for internet, I figured it would make sense to get prepaid as I can pay $30 for one month and have access when I need it. Also being prepaid if I'm not using it I don't need to buy any more credit until I do need it. To satisfy my need to feel like I'm having some FUN I bought a pink one:

The other thing was to pay off some shoes I had on layaway before I started my 'credit crunching', which I did, but did not notice until I got home that the silly girl did not give me my receipt. Usually I will let something sit in the closet for a week while I decide if I'm going to use it or not. I had put a dress on layaway for work, as I have a lot of meetings interstate this year and needed non-uniform business wear. I figured I could get along without it and was going to return it but now the girl did not give my my receipt I can't, plus the store said it scans at $21 so that's all I'd get in exchange value. So I guess it stays.

Yesterday in Adelaide, I spotted this cardigan in Bardot which I really, REALLY want; as I have been looking for one just like this one for AGES!!! But I should be really good and not buy it.

Although.... it is my birthday next week, so maybe I could buy it for myself??? Hee hee...

My nail polish of the moment is Flashbulb Fuschia by O.P.I. I got this one in Singapore last year and I LOVE it, it's so pretty & fun and makes me think of cocktails on holiday :)
